| The Parthenon stands
proudly as the centerpiece of Centennial Park, Nashville's
premier urban park.
Centennial Park is directly across from the Marriott Nashville
Hotel and contains a Greek Parthenon replica, including
a 60 foot statue of the goddess Athena, a Nashville history
museum and an art gallery. The park also contains sports and
entertainment facilities.
Centennial Park is a 132 acre park and features a variety
of memorials and structures including the famous Parthenon
housing the large statue of Athena. The park was the home
of the 1897 Tennessee Centennial Exposition and today is full
of spacious lush greenery with flowers and trees, along with
a recreation center, and there is even a small lake called
Lake Watauga. The park is also home to many festivals, concerts,
and other events throughout the year.
This replica of the original Parthenon in Athens serves
as a monument to what is considered the pinnacle of classical
architecture. The plaster replicas of the Parthenon Marbles
found in the Naos are direct casts of the original sculptures
which adorned the pediments of the Athenian Parthenon, dating
back to 438 B.C. The originals of these powerful fragments
are housed in the British Museum in London. |
