Luther Burbank was a famous horticulturist who made Santa
Rosa his home for more than 50 years. Burbank is well-known
for his experimentation with plant-breeding and introduced
over 800 varieties of plants, including fruits, vegetables,
nuts and grains, and several ornamental flowers
Burbank Home: Luther Burbank lived in this modified
Greek Revival house with his mother from 1884 to 1906. (He
had a larger home built next door in 1906; it was removed
in the late 1960s.) After Burbank's death in 1926, his widow
Elizabeth renovated this charming old cottage where she lived
until her death in 1977. She made several additions and improvements
to the structure, and its present appearance and
furnishings reflect her warmth and good taste.
The Greenhouse: Designed and built by Luther
Burbank in 1889, this building houses changing exhibitions,
and includes a replica of his office which contains many of
his tools.
Carriage House Museum & Gift Shop: Originally a place
to store carriages and horse tack, the carriage house was
renovated in 1986 as a museum. Exhibits relate to the ongoing
impact of Burbank's life and work. A replica of the original
cupola atop the building was added in 1989. The gift shop
features an unusual array of one-of-a-kind items.
From April through October, theCarriage House Gift Shop is
open Tues. - Sun., 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. |
