Founded in 1787, Misión La Purísima Concepción De María Santísima (Mission of the Immaculate Conception of Most Holy Mary) was the 11th Francisan Mission in California. Primarly concerned with converting Indians to Catholicism, the missionaries also build many buildings and set up a system of agriculture with wich to sustain themselves. In 1812, an Earthquake destroyed many of the La Purisima Mission buildings. As a result, the Mission was rebuild four miles northwest of the original site. After the California Missions were secularized in 1834, many different owners used the La Purisima buildings for many different purposes. Finally, in 1933, the property was given to public ownership and reconstruction of the Mission was initaited. Currently, ten of the original buildings and the water system have been restored and currently reside in the La Purisima Mission State Historic Park.
